In November 2009 the BBC reported that over a five period some 66,000 thousand Americans were admitted to emergency services after using a ride on mower. It’s not surprising when you think the machine has sharp metal blades moving with easily enough force to cut off a finger, or worse.
Here are some tips when using a ride on mower that you should follow:
1. It is strongly recommended that you wear safety goggles to protect your eyes whilst operating the mower. This becomes more important in dry conditions when grass cuttings and dust are more likely to fly up into your eyes.
2. Wear sensible clothing that will protect you from stones and other objects being thrown out from the blades. For example, don’t wear shorts! A stone flying at a good number of knots can produce some rather nasty cuts.
3. Ear defenders are also recommended – although designed to reduce as much of the noise as possible there’s generally no getting away from the fact that ride on mowers are noisy machines. If you are going to be using your mower for a long time it’s worth protecting your ears.
