Good house layout takes its type in part from the forces that act on it.  Environment and climate are two of the strongest type-makers (there are no igloos in the tropics) given that houses need to be created and constructed to repel the damaging effects of the world we stay in.  Mother Nature is always attempting to tear our buildings down.

Climate and weather conditions also have an effect on the comfort and ease of our houses, and trigger us to find out methods to maintain the temperature and humidity of our properties in tolerable ranges.  A fantastic deal of layout effort is devoted to retaining the heat in or maintaining the heat out, depending on the climate and time.

At times throughout American history, the varieties of our homes have mirrored – to greater or lesser extents – our ingenuity in generating our homes’ inner climates far more comfortable.
